Cooperative Extension to offer classes for kids in archery, fishing, poultry, rocheting, trees and more during spring break

CANTON – Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County has several special school break programs for kids April 9 to 13 at the Extension Learning Farm, State Rt. 68.

Enrollment information is needed in advance and classes may be cancelled if signups are low. Call Cornell Cooperative Extension at 379-9192 to register.

• Wee Water Wigglies: Monday, April 9, 1 to 3 p.m. Free. Join Krystal White to explore the farm’s ponds and wetlands. Learn about the life cycles of local insects, collect and identify macro-invertebrates living in our waters, and learn how they can serve as indicator species of water quality.

• Archery: Tuesday, April 10, 9 a.m. to noon. $5. Patrick Ames, 4-H shooting sports instructor, describes a brief history of the bow, types and parts of the bow, and basic shooting form. Equipment provided. Participants must be 9 years of age or older.

• Basic Fishing and Casting Workshop: Tuesday, April 10, 11 to 3 p.m. Free. Volunteers from Junior Bass Masters instruct youth in the basics of fishing, fishing equipment, and casting. Equipment provided.

• Backyard Poultry: Wednesday, April 11, 9 a.m. to noon. $5. Good for the entire family. Learn how to get started on back yard poultry project, covering incubation, starter chicks, brooders, housing and portable poultry pens. Class will cover meat birds and layers.

• It’s a Giant Pumpkin Charlie Brown: Wednesday, April 11, 1 to 3 p.m. $5. An introduction to basic gardening, including how to establish and plan your garden. Participants meet in the classroom, but instruction is in the farm’s new high tunnel greenhouse. Participants will leave with 3 to 4 giant pumpkin seeds that they will plant during the workshop. These seeds originated in Hopkinton from pumpkins averaging 12 pounds.

• Drawing Trees with Paula Towne: Thursday, April 12, 10 a.m. to noon. $10. Gouverneur Artist and 4-H volunteer Paula Towne shares her style of drawing trees and branches. Budding young artists should not miss this.

• Advanced Crocheting: Thursday, April 12, 1 to 3 p.m. $10. Paula Towne leads in crocheting a handbag from recycled fabrics. While this class is designed for the students who participated in Paula’s previous workshop, newcomers are welcome and encouraged.

• Orienteering: Friday, April 13, 10 to 3 p.m. Learn to read a topographical map, use a compass, and measure distance traveled, and put it into action on an orientation course set up on the four-acre Learning Farm. This class is reserved for 4-H Shooting Sports participants enrolled in Cooperative Extension’s eight-week program beginning April 6. You may inquire about or enroll in the shooting sports program by calling 379-9192.

Classes are appropriate for most age groups; youth under 8 should to be accompanied by an adult. Participants who wish to take morning and afternoon classes on the same day can bring a lunch with them. Extension staff will provide supervision between sessions.
