North Country This Week
MADRID - Civil War soldiers will converge on the village of Madrid July 24-25.
Presented by the St. Lawrence County Historical Association (SLCHA), the St. Lawrence Power and Equipment Museum (SLPEM), and the 11th New York Light Artillery/Alexander’s Battery, the Civil War Reenactment Weekend will be held at a new location at the Power and Equipment Museum, 1755 NY-345.
The festivities will be held Saturday, July 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“The new venue facilitates great access with a log cabin, old schoolhouse and a fort that plays in well with the whole weekend,” said Tim Cryderman, president of the SLCHA board of directors. “We are back and running and expect a lot of people turning out.”
In 2019, a Civil War-Era historical stockade and interpretive center named Fort Tribute was built there to honor soldiers from St. Lawrence county. “Sutlers” (those who sold provisions to soldiers) will have a store on this military post, with merchandise such as toy muskets, kepis (caps) and bonnets, as well as an array of high-quality reenacting gear.
“The reenactors are anxious and excited to get back in their old routine,” Cryderman said.
Highlights of the event will include Confederate and Union Encampments; historical talks such as “Life of John Brown,” “What’s in my haversack?,” and “Small Arms of the Civil War;” and demonstrations of artillery firing and a Children’s Muster, which illustrates how members in a military unit are formally gathered, especially for inspection.
Live battle reenactments will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. Field Music of the 12th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment will entertain the “civilians” and soldiers. SLPEM will have a food booth on site.
Some additional attractions at SLPEM include a one-room schoolhouse, carriage house, log cabin, heritage fibers building, blacksmith shop, farmhouse, and more.
