Brave people to again jump into frigid St. Lawrence Seaway during Polar Bear Plunge

OGDENSBURG -- The North Country isn't cold enough for some people, so why not take advantage of those frost-resistant sanity-challenged people by asking them to jump almost naked into the St. Lawrence River in February to raise some money for good causes?

The Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce is doing just that with its annual Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at the city marina near the Dobisky Visitor’s Center, 100 Riverside Ave.

A 5K run and a chili cookoff are also planned.

Plunge registration begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Dobisky Center.

The Polar Bear Plunge is a huge crowd favorite each year during Ogdensburg’s “River Shiver,” which takes place from Feb 12 to 20.

Each “plunger” gets pledges to jump, and the person who brings in the most money in pledges receives 10 percent of the entire purse. They also dress in costumes, which are judged for originality.

The events includes a hot tub for the jumpers, hot refreshments and raffles.

The proceeds are split between the Ogdensburg Volunteer Rescue Squad who cut the hole in the ice and provide harnesses and on-ice assistance to the jumpers, and the Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce.

This year the chamber has lined up a complete day of activities for the 12th. The area Lions Clubs will have a 5K Run in the morning along the Maple City Trail, and the Ogdensburg Elks Club will hold their Annual Chili Cook-Off to benefit the Ogdensburg Boys & Girls Club.
