Bottle collector tells stories of hobby April 6 in Cranberry Lake

CRANBERRY LAKE -- Folklorist Jill Breit, executive director of TAUNY, will host a storytelling session with one of the North Country's most successful bottle collectors, Gordon Taylor of Cranberry Lake, on Wednesday, April 6, at 6 p.m., at Windfall Bar & Grill, Tooley Pond Road.

Taylor began collecting bottles over 60 years ago with his wife Nina. Together, they found treasure behind abandoned buildings, along railroad beds, and in a variety of local "dumps." The couple operated an antiques shop for many years.

Over the years, the collection grew to include more than 200 bottles, many of which are on display in the dining room at the Windfall Bar & Grill.

On April 6, Taylor will explain how he got interested in bottle collecting, describe how he acquired some of the bottles in the collection, and share the local history associated with favorite bottles in his collection. He will also bring photographs and old postcards to accompany the storytelling.

Cranberry Lake historian Jeanne Reynolds, a long-time friend of the Taylors, will also participate in the storytelling session.

Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) will record the session for their archival collection. The public is encouraged to attend to listen, ask questions, and bring in examples of local bottles for a show-and-tell session after the storytelling.

Dinner will be served at Windfall Bar & Grill as usual, limited to the bar and pub area during the storytelling session.
