Boating safety course to be offered to students and community in three school districts

Students at the Lisbon, Hammond, and Morristown School Districts will be able to complete a boating safety course in each district’s after-school program before the summer boating season begins.

The U.S.C.G. “About Boating Safely” will be offered at the Lisbon School District April 8-11, from 3 to 5 p.m. each day. Pre-register with Mrs. Rexford, 315-393-4951 or rexfordj@lisbon.k12.ny.us. Staff, faculty, and community members may also attend this course.

Morristown and Hammond students, staff, faculty and community members may pre-register with Mrs. Calkins at 315-375-8814 ext. 21011. The Hammond course will be May 8-10 and 13 from 3 to 5 p.m., and the Morristown course will be held on May 14-17 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Participants must attend all four sessions to be certified.

The “About Boating Safely” certificate and card are awarded at the end of the last session and are valid in New York State and all other states.

Instructors are local Auxiliary members with years of experience teaching boating safety.

“Statistics confirm that the safest boater on the water is an educated boater.” said Commander Rebecca MacMartin of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary in Ogdensburg. “There is no reason to head out on the water without knowing what you’re doing, and before the summer boating season begins is the best time to take a boating safety class.”

A certified boating safety course is required in New York State for everyone at least 14 years old or older operating a personal watercraft (i.e. jet ski), and, motor boat operators born on or after May 1, 1996, and at least 10 years of age.
