OGDENSBURG – This year’s Battle of Ogdensburg commemoration features “A Conversation with a Veteran of the Battle of Ogdensburg,” as well as an English Country dance and open house at Sherman Inn, 615 Franklin St.

The Fort la Presentation Association, in conjunction with Forsythe Rifles, presents the Battle of Ogdensburg Weekend on Feb. 23 and 24, said a press release from the Association.

An open house is set for the Sherman Inn from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, with the re-enactment commemorating the Feb. 22, 1813 battle starting at 1:30 p.m. in the streets of downtown Ogdensburg.

The battle starts at the corner of Riverside and Franklin streets and ends at State and Ford streets.

Historian Dallas Robinson will speak at 3 p.m. at the inn, delivering the address “A Conversation with a Veteran of the Battle of Ogdensburg.”

An English country dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Sherman Inn.

On Sunday, there will be a wreath laying ceremony at Sheriff York’s grave at the Ogdensburg Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., followed at 1:30 p.m. by the continuation of the battle re-enactment at the Fort de la Presentation grounds at Van Rensselaer (Lighthouse) Point.

All parts of the weekend are free and open to the public.

“The battle includes re-enactors from all over Northern New York and Eastern Canada,” said Tim Cryderman, vice president of the Fort Association and president of Forsyth’s Rifles.

“We are honored to have Mr. Robinson as our guest speaker this year.”

In 1813, British soldiers crossed the frozen St. Lawrence River and attacked Ogdensburg, which was a threat to the British supply lines during the War of 1812.

The battle resulted in the British capturing the supplies from the Fort and breaking up the militia and the 1st Rifle Regiment lead by Benjamin Forsyth.

The Fort was not re-supplied after that.

The Fort la Presentation Association is dedicated to reconstruction the historical mission Fort la Presentation near its original site.

The Association works to unite the community in support of this undertaking.

Its goals are to educate, to collect, to preserve or maintain, to develop, to research, to document, to interpret and to recreate educational and historical ventures of interest to Ogdensburg and the St. Lawrence Region.
