POTSDAM -- The Northern Zone Association for Counselors and Development sponsors a day with adolescence expert Michael Nerney for staff development day Friday, Nov. 12.
Nerney will provide training on “The Adolescent Brain and Bullying,” from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Knowles Conference Center at SUNY Potsdam. The cost is $30 for non-members and $20 for members. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Nerney's understanding of adolescent issues is drawn from 12 years experience as a teacher and coach in junior high and high schools, including three years with the Adirondack Mountain School, a residential school for boys. He went on for four years in the chemical dependency field as a substance abuse counselor and Director of the Drug Abuse Prevention Council in Hamilton County. He is a certified instructor in violence prevention and management with the Crisis Prevention Institute. He has been a consultant for two of the major television networks and appeared on the ABC program 20/20.
Nerney's areas of expertise include psycho-pharmacology, adolescent chemical dependency, relapse prevention, gender differences in communication, and managing violent incidents.
