Adk winter outing schedule offers much to do

The Laurentian Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club’s outing schedule for the winter is complete, including the traditional New Year’s Day potluck and ski.

More details are available from the leader listed. Events are:

• Jan. 1 (Saturday), skiing and snowshoeing followed by apres-ski potluck snacks; meet at Clarkson University Outdoor Lodge in the early afternoon for skiing; the potluck usually happens around 4 p.m. Tom Ortmeyer, 265-8219, tortmeye@twcny.rr.com.

• Jan. 8 (Saturday), climb Dial and Nippletop, both mountains, 12 miles round trip, depending on weather; will likely ski the first 3 miles from the Ausable Club, then snowshoes for the remainder. Very strenuous, 2,500+ feet climb. Debbie White dwhite46r@gmail.com, 322-4066.

• Jan. 15 (Saturday), New Hikers Series: Beginners’ snowshoe to Grassy Pond, a 3-mile round trip by skis or snowshoes, starting just off route 30 near Paul Smiths. Skis or snowshoes required. Lois and Duncan Cutter dcutter1@twcny.rr.com, 328-4675.

• Jan. 22 (Saturday), Ski Jackrabbit Trail in Keene, the section of the trail from Pack n Paddle to Alstead Road and back; nice scenery and several rock ledges. 7 miles round trip. • Jan. 23 (Sunday), New Hikers Series: Mt Arab, part of the “kids on the trail” challenge and the “fire tower challenge.” Views from the tower on the summit are excellent; one-mile ascent a good beginning snowshoe hike for reasonably fit kids and adults. We will provide hot drinks on the summit. Snowshoes with claws/crampons required; some may be available to borrow. Blair Madore madorebf@potsdam.edu 265-0602.

• Jan. 21-23 (Friday-Sunday) Tug Hill Winter Outing, details from Ron Fillhart rcfillhart@yahoo.com 298-7424. At the Mad River Club near Sandy Creek, Tug Hill Plateau. The weekend includes a variety of skiing and snowshoeing trips, with clubhouse-style accommodations and several meals, $65. ADK membership not required. • Jan. 29 (Saturday), Ski at Lampson Falls, Ski from Lampson Falls toward Harper Falls, optional snowshoe down to Harper Falls. This is beautiful terrain, and covering it on skis is a delightful way to do it. About 7 miles with some hills. Skis required. Ann and Armond Spencer aaspencer@verizon.net, 379-1383.

• Feb. 16 (Wednesday), Snowshoe around Black Pond; begin at Paul Smiths College’s St. Regis Cafe on the lake with lunch served by the Culinary Arts students. Fairly easy, no serious climb, 2-3 miles. • Feb. 19 (Saturday) Ski into Clear Pond,Parishville; a cross-country ski trip from White Hill Road, a 3.4-mile round trip; optional moderately challenging loop around the pond, another 2 to 3 miles. • Feb. 26 (Saturday), New Hikers Series: Snowshoeing to The Pinnacle, for young, old, and novice snowshoers, those recovering from injuries, Winter 46ers in the mood for an easy trip, and everyone else; moderate 5 miles, several hundred feet of gain; leisurely-paced; great view near Santa Clara. • March 2 (Wednesday), Snowshoe/ski at the VIC in Paul Smiths, meeting at the college for lunch by the culinary students at the St. Regis Cafe which overlooks the lake and St. Regis Mountain; then early afternoon ski/snowshoe. • March 5 (Saturday) Long ski in the Gatineau Park in the hills just north of Ottawa on mostly groomed trails for 50 km, or a shorter piece. Very strenuous. Difficulty varies with snow conditions, type of skis, and experience. Skis required. Tom VandeWater 386-8489, tvandewater@ccsdk12.org.

• March 19 (Saturday) Mt. Van Hoevenberg Snowshoe Hike, from South Meadow Road on a fairly level trail, steady climb to the summit ridges at 2.2 miles; far-reaching views of Mt. • March 27 (Sunday) Spring Road Walk near the Grasse River, in the early spring mud season with an afternoon walk on quiet back roads in the upper Grasse River area. Exact location dependant on weather. 5-7 miles total length, fairly easy. Tom Ortmeyer (315-265-8219, tortmeye@twcny.rr.com.
