The annual 4-H Shooting Sports Program for young people has set dates in April and May at the Norfolk Rod and Gun Club and at the Cooperative Extension Learning Farm in Canton.
The program for youth 9 to 19 years old emphasizes firearm skills, and teaches topics such as wildlife identification, forestry and outdoor skills. They encourage parents to get involved, too.
Juniors, age 9 to 11, will work with air rifles and archery. Seniors, age 12 to 19, will also use .22 cal. rifles and shotguns.
Instruction includes firearm safety, basic marksmanship, range procedures, and maintenance of firearms. Students will also be introduced to map, compass, and GPS use and basic outdoor skills.
The 2012 program schedule is April 6, 6-8 p.m.; April 13, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; April 21, 9 a.m. to noon; April 27, 6-8 p.m.; May 5, 9 a.m. to noon; May 11, 6-8 p.m.; May 19, 9 a.m. to noon; May 26, 9 a.m. to noon.
The cost is $30 per Junior, and $40 per Senior. The fee includes memberships, insurance, supplies (ammo and targets), and facility use.
