20th Annual Madrid Canoe Regatta this weekend

MADRID -- The 20th Annual Madrid Canoe Regatta takes to the Grasse River Saturday and Sunday.

Every year, the St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers have presented the series of one- and two-person canoe and kayak races based along the river at the Madrid Community Park.

There is a variety of marathon races for pros and amateurs, shorter races, and recreation races just for fun.

The two-person canoe races for pros – one on Saturday of 12 miles and the other Sunday for 16 miles -- each have $1,000 in prize money going to the top finishers.

Many races carry points in New York Marathon Canoe Racing competition.

Registration Saturday opens at 9 a.m.

Saturday’s races include an 11 a.m. start for nine-mile marathon race and a 12-mile race two-person canoe (C-2) pro race and a 12-mile two-person kayak (K-2) points race.

At 11:45 a.m., the weekend’s first recreation race begins. The three-miler is for several classes of paddlers, including men’s and women’s solo and tandem canoes and kayaks, and craft with mixed crews of men, women, and juniors.

Sunday signups start at 8 a.m.

Sunday’s events begin at 10 a.m. with a 16-mile C-2 pro race, and a 13-mile amateur race for several classes of paddlecraft.

At 10:30 is the six-mile recreational race.

Entry fees are $5 for people of high school age and younger as of June 1, adult non-members $20, adult St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers members $15, active military and veterans $15, military and vets SLVP members $10. There are separate fees for pro entries.
