Unemployment down in St. Lawrence, neighboring counties

In May, St. Lawrence County had 200 fewer people employed, 40,800, than in May 2018, 41,000, and about 500 fewer than this past April, at 41,300, according to preliminary figures released Tuesday by the state Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate in St. Lawrence County stood at 4.9% in May, an improvement of 0.1 % over the May 2018 figure of 5.0% and better than the 5.2% reported for April this year.

The number of unemployed tallied by DOL stood at 2,100 last month, the same number as in May 2018 and an improvement over the 2,300 people reported receiving benefits in April 2019.

To our east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate stood at 4.4% last month, an improvement over the 4.9% reported in May 2018 and in April of this year. Eight hundred people were reported to be receiving benefits there in May, compared to 900 in May 2018, and 1,100 in April 2019. This past May and in May of 2018, DOL reported 18,400 on the job, and 18,200 last April.

In Jefferson County, to our west, unemployment was at 4.5%, or 2,000 people in May, compared with 4.8% or 2,100 in May 2018, and 5.3% or 2,300 people without work last April. here were 42,700 people working in May compared with 42,500 in May 2018 and 41,200 last April.

These figures are not adjusted for seasonal variation and some figures do not add to totals due to rounding, DOL said.
