St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate went up in January compared to the same month in 2020, according to preliminary figures from the state Department of Labor.
DOL says St. Lawrence County had 7% unemployment last month, up from 6.4% in January 2020. DOL says there were 600 people receiving benefit last month and 500 the same month last year, along with 40,400 employed in Jan. 2020 and 39,900 in Jan. 2021.
To the east in Franklin County, the rate went from 5.8% in Jan. 2020 to 6.5% last month, with 1,100 people receiving benefits compared to 1,300, respectively. There were 18,200 people employed in the county in Jan. 2021, down from 18,400 a year ago, DOL said.
To the west in Jefferson County, the rate dropped from 7.3% in Jan. 2020 to 7.1% in Jan. 2021, with respective employment totals of 39,900 and 40,000. The county had 3,100 people receiving benefits in January this year, down from 3,200 a year ago, DOL said.
