CANTON -- St. Lawrence County's unemployment rate was 5.5% in July, which was a slight dip from July 2018's rating of 5.6%, said a press release from the state labor department.

The rate represents 40,000 employed people versus 40,800 counted in July 2018 (these numbers coupled with the decreased rate could reflect an overall population drop in the region from last year).

The number of unemployed people in July was 2,300, which was down slightly from 2,400 in July 2018, the department said.

In Jefferson County, which includes the Watertown-Fort Drum metro area, the unemployment rate for July was 4.7%, up from 4.6% in July 2018.

Neighboring Franklin County saw a slight drop to 4.5% in July, which was down from 4.6% the previous year.

Lewis County also experienced a slight decrease to 4.2%, which was down from 4.3% in the same month in 2018.

The North Country numbers are all higher than the nationwide rate of 4% for July 2019, but closer to the statewide average of 4.2%.
