St. Lawrence County unemployment rises to 10.7%, among highest in state

St. Lawrence County once again ranks among counties in the state with the highest unemployment rate for June -- 10.7 percent.

The county experienced a sharp increase from 9.9 percent in May, according to the state Labor Department. The rate one year ago in June 2010 10.5 percent.

In neighboring Franklin County to the east, the jobless rate remained at 8.6 percent, unchanged from May, but up just a bit from 8.4 percent in June 2010.

To the west, Jefferson County also saw its rate drop slightly from 9.1 percent in May to 9.0 in June, the labor department reports. But it was higher than one year ago, when the rate was 8.5 percent in June 2010.

Statewide, the unemployment rate was 8.0 percent in June, up from 7.8 percent in May but less than one year ago, when the rate was 8.4.

The Labor Department reported a total of 43,200 employed in St. Lawrence County in June, compared to 44,100 in May and 43,800 in June 2010.

The number of unemployed in St. Lawrence County was 5,200 in June, 4,900 in May and 5,100 in June 2010, the Labor Department report said.
