St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate dropped to 9.7 percent in August, but it remained the highest in New York State outside of the metropolitan New York City area.
In July, the unemployment rate had been 10.5 percent while one year ago it was 10.3 percent, according to figures released today by the state Labor Department.
A total of 42,500 people were employed in St. Lawrence County in August, compared to 42,200 in July and 43,100 in August 2010.
The number of unemployed in the county was 4,600 in August, 5,000 in July as well as in August 2010, the Labor Department said.
To our west, the unemployment rate in Jefferson County dropped to 8.2 percent in August, compared to 8.7 percent in July and 8.3 percent one year ago.
To the east, the Franklin County unemployment rate was 7.8 percent in August, 8.2 percent in July and 8.1 percent in August 2010.
Statewide, the unemployment rate dropped to 7.7 percent in August. It stood at 8.0 percent in July and 8.3 percent in August 2010, the Labor Department said.
