St. Lawrence County saw a 33% reduction in sales tax collections in May.

The state Comptroller's Office reports the county took in $3.1 million in sales tax collection last month, down from $4.6 million in May 2019.

April's sales tax net was down 19%, the comptroller said, with $3.6 million taken in that month and $4.5 million in the same month last year.

For the period of January through May, St. Lawrence County has seen a 9.4% drop in sales tax collections. The comptroller's office said the county received $21.3 million for that timeframe this year, and $22.8 for the same period last year.

“We anticipated that sales tax revenues would continue to drop because of COVID-19 but the May sales tax figures show just how deep it is cutting into municipal finances,” State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said in a prepared statement. “Sales tax revenues are vital funding not only for the state but for municipalities like counties and cities as well. The federal government needs to step up and provide financial help to states and local governments hit hard by this virus to avoid severe cuts to critical services.”
