St. Lawrence County public hearing for agricultural districts set for April 20

CANTON — St. Lawrence County is holding a public hearing to give the public the opportunity to comment on the Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board’s recommended additions to Agricultural Districts 1 and 2.

The public hearing will be held on Thursday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in the County Planning Office, located on the 2nd floor of the County Public Safety Complex at 49 ½ Court St.

This spring, the County received requests to add one, .3 acre parcel to Ag District 1, and eight parcels totaling 358.5 acres to Ag District 2. These parcels are located in the towns of Oswegatchie, Lisbon, Norfolk, Parishville and Pierrepont.

When examining each requested addition, the County’s Ag and Farmland Protection Board reviewed a parcel’s existing use; satellite imagery; if the land contains prime soils; whether the land receives an agricultural exemption; and whether the agricultural use is consistent with local land use regulations. Lands that are recommended for inclusion have either satisfied, or are exempt from the criteria.

At its meeting on April 6, the Ag and Farmland Protection Board recommended the County Board of Legislators to accept all the requested additions.

Maps depicting the locations of the proposed additions were emailed to the municipal clerk of each town where the parcels are located. Digital copies of these maps can also be obtained by emailing mlarson@stlawco.org.

Those who cannot attend the public hearing online can email written comments by close of business on Thursday, April 20 to mlarson@stlawco.org.
