GOUVERNEUR -- The St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce says someone representing himself as from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has been running an apparent scam in the Gouverneur area.
County Chamber Associate Director Elllen Nesbitt says she followed up on a report that someone claiming to be from the U.S. Chamber has been soliciting memberships, asking for $500 on the spot and a business card with the business owner's signature on the back.
Nesbitt says that when she called the U.S. Chamber to find out about it, they said they don't operate that way, and don't have a representative in the area.
Nesbitt says county law enforcement has been alerted.
