Public can comment on Ag & Farmland Protection Board’s recommendation in Canton Apr. 16

CANTON -- St. Lawrence County has scheduled a public hearing to give the public the opportunity to comment on the Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board’s recommended additions to Agricultural District 2.

The public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 16 in the county planning office, second floor of the Public Safety Complex.

This spring, the county received requests to add three parcels to Ag Districts 1 and 2 that total 68 acres.

These parcels are located in the towns of Hammond, Lawrence and Stockholm.

When examining each requested addition, the county’s Ag and Farmland Protection Board reviewed a parcel’s existing use, whether local regulations allow agricultural uses at the requested location, whether the land receives an agricultural valuation, and if the land contains prime soils.

Lands recommended for inclusion have either satisfied, or are exempt from the criteria. All but one parcel satisfied these criteria, and the board has recommended the county legislature accept two parcels totaling 62 acres to Ag District 2.

Maps depicting the requested additions are available in the county planning office, and in the municipal building of each town where a requested addition was made.

Digital copies of these maps can also be obtained by emailing mlarson@stlawco.org.

Those who cannot attend the public hearing can email written comments no later than April 19 to mlarson@stlawco.org.
