CANTON -- A downtown fixture since 1972 is up for sale, but only to the right person or persons.

Rainbow and Joshua Crabtree, owners of Nature’s Storehouse, 21 Main St., recently decided it was time to move on and allow a new owner to continue the tradition.

“We are committed to finding the right buyer. Someone who is interested in purchasing Nature’s because they are interested in ‘this’ business, someone who cares about the North Country community,” said Rainbow, who said it will be business as usual until a sale is finalized. “We are committed to sitting tight until then.”

Now a focal point of downtown Canton, Crabtree feels Nature’s Storehouse has played an important role in shaping the community.

She said during family weekends at the colleges, students enjoy bringing their families to Nature’s to show them where they like to patronize.

“I feel proud of knowing that everyday we work really hard to provide access to good, clean food and local when possible,” Crabtree remarked.

She also remembered an eight-year-old who had frequented the store with parents coming in to make a purchase with his or her own money.

“It lit me up,” Crabtree recalled.

“Having faith and continued support helps keep a community what it is,” she added. “We are excited to pass the baton to those who will guide this business into the future. Nature’s Storehouse has its own character and momentum. It is rooted in the community and contributes to the unique sense of ‘place’ that is the North Country, and the village of Canton.”

Nature’s Storehouse is a full-service health food store featuring vitamins and supplements, health and beauty products, local and organic produce, meat and dairy, grocery, bulk foods and a wall of bulk herbs and spices.

“We work closely with local farmers and producers to offer hundreds of local products to our customers,” Crabtree noted.

The property includes two rentals on the second floor.

“Nature’s has provided a steady income for our family for the past 19 years,” voiced Crabtree. “Through major road construction and this pandemic, the local community has continued to support our small business. We believe that small, locally-owned business are essential to a sustainable and vibrant community, and it appears that our customers feel the same.”

“Joshua and I are planning to stay in Canton. I would like to have a Nature’s Storehouse to buy fresh and organic food,” she stated.

The Foote family opened the business in 1972, later selling to Miriam Preis, then shifting to Georgie Mallett and then to the Crabtree family in 2002.
