More than 4,000 received unemployment in St. Lawrence County in May

St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate hit 10.3% in May as more than 4,000 people claimed jobless benefits.

The Department of Labor says the 10.3% rate is up from 4.9% in May 2019. They say 4,600 people received unemployment last month, up from 2,100 in May of last year. DOL says 39,900 people were employed in the county last month, down from 40,600 in May 2019.

To the east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate rose to 11.1%, up from 4.4% in May 2019. They saw 2,200 people receive benefits, up from 800 a year ago. In May, 17,900 people were employed in the county, down from 18,200 the same month last year.

To the west in Jefferson County, the unemployment rate hit 12% last month, up from 4.6% in May 2019. Last month, 5,100 people there received jobless benefits, up from 2,000 in May 2019. The county had 37,200 people employed in May 2020 and 41,700 the same month last year.
