MASSENA -- The town of Massena is getting $200,000 in Community Development Block Grant funding to dole out as grants to local businesses.

The grants will be up to $35,000 each. They are for assisting small businesses looking to start up or expand. They must employ five people or less, including the owner, town officials said.

“(Massena Business Develoment Corporation Director) Jim Murphy will be coordinating that. He will hold public meetings to discuss it,” Town Supervisor Steve O’Shaughnessy said at the Jan. 29 town board meeting. “There will be a separate board we’ll have to appoint that will rank the applications and prioritize them … it’s still several months out.”

Councilor Sam Carbone said people who several months filled out the applications to gauge local interest in the program will have to file a new application.

"If they're interested in it, they'd have to re-apply again,” Carbone said.
