MASSENA -- Organizers of summer fishing tournaments in Massena are going to be in a crunch with trying to pull off the Fishing League Worldwide tourney scheduled for July 9 to 11.

Councilor Sue Bellor said she and other town officials and sport promoters recently talked about the event and it all hinges on the North Country region advancing to phase four of reopening.

She said the Department of Environmental Conservation will issue the permit, but only when phase four happens. That’s on track to start as early as the end of next week.

“Everything goes back to that permit,” Bellor said.

Councilor Bob Elsner said they need the DEC permit in order to get NYPA to allow them to use the Massena Intake for parking and launching the boats.

“We have a lot of people doing things like things are going to go off on [July 9]. We really need to get an answer on the availability of parking,” Elsner said. “The sooner we can get that, the more comfortable we’d be trying to develop our final plans.”

“The parking went really smooth last year,” he said.
