PITCAIRN – The remaining 388 acres of Boy Scout Camp Portaferry, closed since 2006, have been sold to Land First Inc., a local developer.
Previously, 80 acres of the camp, located in the towns of Pitcairn and Fine, had been sold to an adjacent landowner.
According to the most recent agreement, Land First Inc. has agreed to incorporate the name of Camp Portaferry into future development of the property, said a prepared statement from the Longhouse Council.
“No one likes to sell a Scout camp,” Rich Avery, Longhouse Council Scout Executive and CEO. “There are always great memories and strong emotional attachments to such properties.”
The camp closed following the merger of the Seaway Council and the Hiawatha Council in 1999. That council then merged with the former Cayuga County Council and formed the re-named Longhouse Council in 2010.
“The merger left us with an abundance of facilities and Camp Portaferry was the least used,” said Avery. ”We’re confident that Land First will honor the legacy of Camp Portaferry with solid environmental practices.”
Scout officials said Land First has a “strong reputation for environmentally friendly practices in their developments.”
Longhouse Council represents over 10,000 scouts in a six-county area of central and northern New York.
