​​MASSENA — A virtual presentation on bullying and harassment on social media platforms will be held on Wednesday, May 11 for the Massena Central School District.

Presenting will be Keith Deltano, who is described as an educational comedian and curriculum author with an award-winning background in teaching.

A student specific presentation will take place at 1 p.m., with a second, parent specific presentation planned for 7 p.m., officials say.

The presentation, “How to Bully Proof Your Child, Keep them safe Online and Monitor Social Media” comes shortly after Canton Central School held a public forum on the dangers of social media, online challenges and sextortion schemes.

Such schemes and extortion plots have claimed the lives of multiple St. Lawrence County students over the last 14 months due to suicide and accidental asphyxiation.

Students also recently participated in the Point Break intervention program at the Massena Community Center.

Officials say the event was aimed at generating conversation around social media and cyber bullying within the district, in an effort to find a solution between faculty, staff and students to curb the effects.

Student representative to the Board of Education Logan Dobbins attended the event, saying it was a worthwhile venture.

Point Break seeks “to improve behaviors, values and attitudes in high school students on their campuses and in their communities, intervening before acts of bullying, hatred or violence occur,” according to their website.

“It was an eye opening experience for almost everyone who was able to be there, including administrative officials who went as well,” Dobbins said.
