OGDENSBURG — Why did George Washington send two spy missions to present-day Ogdensburg during the Revolutionary War?

Why did Thomas Jefferson condemn the commander of Fort Oswegatchie (at present-day Ogdensburg).

Why did the British consider the commander of Fort Oswegatchie a hero?

On Wednesday, April 24 at 1 p.m., North Country historian and author James E. Reagen will talk about the Revolutionary War in St. Lawrence County at the Ogdensburg History Museum at 206 Ford Street (near the Department of Motor Vehicle Office).

Sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Swe-kat-si Chapter, Reagen will talk about Northern New York’s unique role in America’s struggle for independence from British rule.

DAR Regent Sally Hartman said the public is invited to attend.

“Fort Oswegatchie played an active role during the war, serving as a staging area for daring raids and major expeditions into the Mohawk Valley,” said Reagen. “Unfortunately, too many people have no idea about this important period in our nation’s history and what happened right here in our own backyard.”

“With the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution approaching in just two years, it’s important for all of us to become more aware of Northern New York’s place in that historic struggle,” said Reagen. “History happened here. We need to help our children and grandchildren become better aware of our region’s role.”

Reagen is the author of “Fort Oswegatchie” which tells the role of the Revolutionary War in Northern New York. He is also the author of "Booze, Badboys & Bootleggers - North Country Tales Grandpa Never Told You," and "Warriors of La Presentation" A History of the North Country's Role in the French and Indian War.  Copies of his books will be available.
