To the Editor:
I read with interest this article in the January 26 issue.
This is the opportunity of the century for Canton to improve itself.
The first priority should be to develop a new concept for our Post Office.
The daily patronage of the Canton Post Office may be the greatest of the downtown businesses, except perhaps for Sergi’s or the Tick Tock (in season).
The clientele (if studied) is probably older than at most of the other businesses.
The current location of the Post Office is awkward, right on the busiest corner in the village, and next to the semi-weekly farmers’ market.
There is nil parking; three spaces which are hotly contested, even in winter when their access to the sidewalk is blocked by a three foot high glacier.
I have visited other regional post offices. Two stand out in my mind; Norwood, and Colton. They both allow off-street parking, and have large capacity lots.
I urge the Powers-That-Be in Canton to consider including a new Post Office in the new Midtown Plaza, suitable for the Twenty First Century.
