The St. Lawrence County Arts Council and the Arts NYS Coalition need to face reality. NYS is broke. Taxpayers who choose to can support the arts through donations. When taxpayers can’t pay their property taxes, feed and clothe their children or themselves, arts are a luxury that some cannot afford. It’s hard to appreciate the arts when you’re homeless and hungry. Funding for such luxuries should be voluntary, not required. The time for austerity is now.
