In response to "Thinking Gun Control Will Work is Insanity," which appeared in the March 17-23 issue of North Country This Week: What is your proof that the SAFE Act and other gun control legislation haven't saved any lives? Are you clairvoyant? It would be impossible to know that a law enacted in 2013 to prevent something from happening in the future has actually prevented a future event from happening. The relationship would have to be correlated over time with analysis of data. Factors that actually neutralize the effectiveness of the SAFE Act are things like the absence of any similar federal legislation, which would prevent interstate firearm traffic. Interesting to note that New York State hasn't seen any mass shootings like Newtown or Parkland. I did a quick search as I wrote that just to be sure, and it was pretty hard to find anything remotely similar. The absence of similar crimes in this state doesn't prove that the SAFE Act works, but it certainly is interesting given we're home to the largest city in the U.S. and, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control, have far higher rates of violent crime and poverty than states with more gun violence and less violent crime and/or poverty.
