In response to “ Teacher’s Salaries” which appeared in the April 30-May 6 issue of North Country This Week: Let’s get one thing straight. Teaching, like any other profession, has good and poor examples. With that in mind, let’s compare your salary idea for teachers, $10 an hour (period) to fast food workers (which will be paid $15 per hour by 2021.) Fast food workers are not required to have a college degree. The cost of college is at least $50,000. Fast food workers can have a job without college. The cost for college for them is $0. Fast food workers – two-week paycheck (40 hours a week) comes out to $1,200 (gross). Teachers’ two-week paycheck (40 hours a week) comes out to $800 (gross). Plus, teachers don’t work (get paid) in the summer (July/August). So there’s another $4,800 the fast food worker made, while the teacher made $0. Again, gross figures. Not only do teachers have to worry about a mortgage, car payment, and other bills that fast food workers do, they have to worry about paying back for the education that was required to become a teacher. The fast food worker does not have this concern. Also, these hours are just based on the hours worked on site. When the fast food worker goes home, their work day is finished. A teacher, while at home, grades papers, tests, quizzes, etc. Teachers must also attend seminars to keep up with new teaching methods, often at their own expense. Also, teachers supply their own materials most of the time, too. Do fast food workers? With this comparison, do you think you are going to get quality teachers to work for less than what a fast food worker makes? And no, I am not a teacher. But, my parents taught. I have aunts, uncles and cousins that taught. And, I currently have a sister that teaches. And don’t forget, if teaching is so easy, you could have done everything I stated here and become a teacher yourself to earn your wonderful salary.
