Regarding the Potsdam Central Music Department’s size (“Music Department Still Big,” March 16-22), Those who oppose the second recent music department faculty cut simply wish to maintain quality music education at PCS. The program will not “…remain as strong as the remaining department wants it to be...” The proposed cut will leave one band instrumental specialist in the district. Because of last year’s music faculty cut, there is already less participation in the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival and there will be no outdoor concert in June. Cut another teacher, and the fourth grade band program will be eliminated. The remaining teachers will have less time to coach students and prepare for performances. We cannot “…continue to celebrate our championship programs as much as we wish.” With reduced contact time and increased class size, performance quality will unquestionably drop, despite the wishes of the faculty. We must preserve our excellent music curriculum.
