Schools need more metal detectors for sure, but they also need more “mental” detectors – professional counselors, psychologists, nurses, doctors, and social workers, to identify troubled kids and help them before they hurt themselves or others. Like it or not, public schools are the de facto frontline social service agency in most communities. We have to equip them with all they need to keep everyone safe. Sending thoughts and prayers after a tragedy is sweet, but impotent. We have to do more. Let’s invest in more mental detectors in our schools. It will save lives.
