It has taken me about 6 weeks to get my emotions and thoughts under control so that I could coherently write this Sound Off. I found out in mid-December about Hannaford Supermarkets plan to close and leave the Massena area. I was very saddened by this news given that I had just started shopping there about 8 months prior after moving back to Massena. I really like the fresh produce and availability of organic and gluten free items in the store. The deli is great with excellent service. Actually all the employees have been most helpful and accommodating. And I really love that there is a food bank pantry box for those needing extra help with food items for our community. Also, the donation box for the Massena Humane Society. That says a lot about a business. So when I found out there was a “rent negotiation issue” between the owner and Hannaford, I eventually became angry. Angry that money and someone’s ego or pride is the cause of yet another provider leaving our community. I find this interesting that community leaders are trying to entice businesses to come to Massena, yet we can’t keep the ones we already have established. Perhaps when there’s only one food business in the area people will wake up. Then you’ll see prices go up.
