I am writing in response to a letter written in North Country This Week by the cyclist thanking someone for rescuing her/him from an apparent vicious dog. You can purchase “halt” spray from Ted at the Treadmill bicycle shop in Potsdam. I carry it at all times when I ride. If you spray the dog in the face it will sting the eyes and it will retreat. It is not life threatening, only a temporary sting and a wonderful defense. Also if you call the New York State Police or St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies they can direct you to the appropriate dog warden in that area. You can later report this irresponsible dog owner and the dog warden will visit their home and enforce the dog leash law. So sorry for your scary experience, thankfully you were not bitten.
