To those Potsdam Town residents who do not get to vote on the dissolution issue, but whose taxes will rise: tough! For years you have benefited from the Potsdam Village while the village residents have paid the bill. As for the police department: the Village of Potsdam is not a high crime rate area unless you count a college student urinating in an alley as a serious crime. Clarkson has a security force, SUNY Potsdam has a security force; there are State Police coverage and Sheriff department’s coverage. This isn’t Harlem or a ghetto; how much police coverage do we really need? Hopefully when the town takes over the responsibilities of the Village DPW, service will not decrease and workers will still be responsive. I doubt that the employees of DPW will lose their commitment or professionalism just because their paycheck is being written by a different entity. To the village trustees: your obstinate refusal to cooperate with the town and consolidate services has led to this situation and made you redundant and probably soon to be unemployed. While you have reaped extraordinary benefits like free health insurance, you have failed to listen to your constituents and meet their needs.
