I leave Clarkson University everyday around 4:30 p.m. to return home to Canton (“Light a Waste of Gas,” Sound Off, March 7-13). Until the traffic light was recently installed I literally put my life at risk trying to turn left off the campus. I have sat at the light and noted that it stays green for traffic moving north and south far longer than it stays green for those leaving campus. It also will make it safer for pedestrians trying to cross the busy street at that intersection. You know what really wastes gas? All of the drivers who consistently speed through the 30 mph zone on that particular stretch of highway, both coming into Potsdam and leaving (in many cases as I have witnessed, to get to Walmart). The amount of gas your vehicle burns while waiting for the light to change is negligible. I think what really bothers you and other drivers is that your unreasonable and law breaking speed gets disrupted.
