In response to In response to “Tailgaters,” (July 23- 29): simple fact of the matter is that it is generally accepted to drive anywhere from 5-10 mph over the posted speed limit. During peaks hours like 4-7 p.m. it is quite normal for the flow of traffic to be going 65 right past troopers and police. To put it simply, if you are driving at the posted speed limit and not keeping with the flow of traffic, you are the one causing a hazardous situation, especially if you are tapping your brakes because you think they are too close. In fact you may want to do some research because brake-checking, which is what you talk about doing, has been considered in court cases to be second-degree assault as intent to frighten and can get you criminal charges as well as your insurance company not being liable for any accident you may cause. Just a little something to keep in mind.
