Regarding the letter about going barefoot, I have gone barefoot as much as possible since I was a little girl (“Go Barefoot,” Sound Off, Jan. 4-10). My mother would not let me go barefoot until the oak tree leaves were as big as a squirrel’s ear. I checked that oak tree every day. Finally she would say it was okay. I still go barefoot. In the winter I sometimes put on socks. I wear shoes outside in the winter but go barefoot outside in the summer all the time. I was raised in the south and it is not uncommon to see people barefoot especially around the house. I still get comments about not having any shoes until I came up north. Nothing is wrong about going barefoot, although I do recommend putting on shoes if you are going to a public establishment. If you are jogging maybe you need shoes for support, but I had a doctor say I could exercise barefoot or with sox on. So I guess it does come down to each his own.
