It is amazing that the PILOT is still being considered for the Potsdam Cottages. PILOTs are used to stimulate the economy by encouraging something like a factory to open to provide new jobs with the result that the new employees will pay their own taxes. If the scale is sufficiently large, the loss in the factory’s tax is more than offset by the increase from the employees. The cottages will neither bring in new students nor significantly add jobs. If a $15 million project can’t afford its own taxes it will surely fail anyway leaving a big mess for the Town to clean up later on. Why are we buying into the threat that it won’t happen if they pay their fair share of taxes? We don’t need it.
