In response to “Dangerous Intersection” which appeared in the April 27-May 3 issue of North Country This Week: we live on the Sullivan Road and were there to help with the recent accident at the intersection of State Route 345. While we agree with the comments that the intersection is dangerous, the idea of making our road a dead end is not the answer. We have tried to slow drivers down on our road. The comment is correct, our road is a short cut to 345. We called the town board a few years ago to ask to have our road posted at 45 or even 30 mph…but nothing could be done about it. We asked the town highway department to make sure that they never pave the road so that it doesn’t become more of a speedway than it is now. We have had them put up children playing signs near the houses in an attempt to slow people down. Nothing seems to make a difference. The warning sign on 345 as you approach from the village has two orange markers on top of it to make people more aware of the intersection. Not sure that makes much difference either. The recent accident was a terrible thing to have happen, but my husband saw the car go by and it was traveling fairly fast. We don’t know if that contributed to the accident or not. But we are surprised that an accident has not happened before now. Personally, we would like to see the hill on 345 lowered, or as the previous letter suggests, to move the intersection further down 345 to the north. At the very least, we suggest, again, that the road be posted at a slower speed limit than the 55mph allowed now. Something needs to happen before another accident occurs.
