Funeral service for Duane H. Dewan, 92, of Canton, will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Canton United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael H. Terrell, officiating. Burial in Purmort Cemetery will be held later in the spring. Duane passed away on Tuesday, March 12 at the Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
Friends may call at the O’Leary Funeral Home, 5821 US Hwy 11; Canton on Friday, from 3-7 p.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Purmort Cemetery or to the Canton United Methodist Church.
Surviving Duane are eight daughters, Roberta Dewan of Syracuse, Jeanne Brady and husband James of Heuvelton, Linda Dewan of Falls Church, VA, Martha Howard of Hagaman, Patricia Crowder and husband Jack of Morehead City, NC, Carol Lasala of Canton, Rose Quaglia and husband Robert of Fayetteville and Beth Dewan of Schenectady; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dora Hammond and husband Don of Rochester.
Duane was predeceased by a son, David Dewan; daughters Paula and Judy Dewan; and by a granddaughter, Cindy Brady.
Duane was born in DePeyster, the son of the late, Stanley and Eva Lou (Fieldson) Dewan. Duane was a milk inspector for New York and for the USDA for a combined 36 years, he also farmed and built milk plants in Heuvelton and Queensboro and was a cheese maker in Syracuse. On December 25, 1943 at the St. Mary’s Rectory, he married Virginia Howard. Virginia predeceased him in June 2003.
Duane was a member of the DePeyster Oddfellows 535, the DePeyster Grange 1049, past member of the Shingle Pond Hunting Club, West Chazy Volunteer Fire Department and past president of the Purmort Cemetery Association.
