Jo A. Backus Adams, 61, of Cortland, N.Y., and formerly of Gouverneur, died Monday, August 2, 2010 at Cortland Regional Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
At Jo’s request, services are private and there will be no calling hours.
She will be laid to rest in her hometown of Gouverneur.
She leaves behind two daughters, Staci (Thomas) Steuart Kirkland and Jennifer J. Steuart. Her grandchildren, Mackenzie Jo Steuart, Taylor M. Sherman and Robert L. Vestal were her pride and joy. She is also survived by her step-father Pat Simmons and ten remaining siblings, Sheila (Dave) Seamans, Patsy (Jack) Ginn, Peggy (Bob) Davis, Danny Backus, Phyllis Backus Roberts, Chris (Christine) Backus, Jimmy (Lynne) Backus, Lori (Larry) Cowles, Kathy Simmons Bates and Karen (Tom) Spedding.
She was predeceased by her father, mother, and sister, Bonnie Backus Hooper.
She was born September 26, 1948 in Gouverneur, N.Y., to Stasia Farr Backus and Rolland L. Backus.
Jo was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, who was loved by many.
Her interests included family, gardening, sewing and reading. It was common knowledge among family not to call at 7:30 when Jeopardy was on.
Jo enjoyed working at Walden Place and told many stories about “her people”.
In her spirit of helping others, Jo had expressed her wishes to help children battling cancer. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to support this cause to the charity of your choice.
