Regarding “A Taxing Solution?” (April 25-May 1): There is a simple solution; have a church tax. Of course the churches will complain, but consider this. First there is no “separation of church and state” issue since the churches and government worked together on this exemption, they didn’t complain about it then! Second, churches can’t complain about how their money is used -- we already target taxes for community oriented programs. This is the idea of churches right? Most religions can’t complain that they can’t afford it; the Catholic church had $600 million to pay abuse victims. All that is needed is stop building inordinately ornate church buildings and support our citizens. I have always found it odd that churches sell themselves as caregivers to people but will fight the opportunity to help the country in general. There will be comments about this “awful” idea, but I am thinking about those who can’t make ends meet and still overpay taxes.
