Mildred E. “Millie” Hayden, 100, Gouverneur

GOUVERNEUR -- Mildred E. “Millie” Hayden, 100, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2018 in North Carolina where she recently moved to be near her family.

A memorial service will be scheduled and announced in the spring. Arrangements are with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur.

Millie was born in Ogdensburg on August 7, 1917, the daughter of Leon and Anna Robinson Washburn.

She graduated from Philadelphia High School in 1936 and married Robert D. “Bob” Hayden on October 5, 1937 at her parent’s home in Philadelphia.

Mr. Hayden, a retired banker, former Gouverneur mayor, and St. Lawrence legislator, passed away on May 2, 1998. The couple resided on Grove Street in Gouverneur for over 50 years and were lifelong residents of Sylvia Lake.

Millie worked at East Side School in Gouverneur for ten years as a cafeteria worker and then was one of four people trained as the first teacher’s aides in the school district.

Millie was a member of the Gouverneur First United Methodist Church and the E.J. Noble Hospital Auxiliary. Millie began as a Red Cross Blood Drive volunteer back when they had a building on North Gordon Street, Mae Foster was their leader, and she assisted on the drive until just a few years ago.

She enjoyed cooking, fishing, bowling, playing pitch with her friends, and was very proud of her hole in one at the Gouverneur Country Club on Hole #2 at the age of 78. She was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Phil Mickelson, and Syracuse University Basketball. Most of all, she enjoyed time spent with friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. “If you have them, love them, and keep them as close as possible, they are our blessings.”

Millie is survived by her daughter, Janice Wall of Richfield, NC; her son, Steve and Jayne Hayden of Leland, NC; her grandchildren, Shelley Everts, Josh Hayden, and Emily Carella; and great grandchildren, Zachary, Avery, Aurora, Tyler, and Hayden; her sisters, Jane Currier and Freida Kent of Philadelphia, Janet Vick of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

Millie was predeceased by her husband, Bob; her parents; brothers Harold, Ray, Roy, and Wesley Washburn; sisters Alice Buttry, Charlotte Washburn, Marie Sixbury and Olive Harrington; and her son-in-law Deryck “Dex” Wall.
