MASSENA -- Mark H. Snider, age 94, previously of Douglas Rd. peacefully passed away, and began a direct trip to heaven on April 13, 2018.

Mark was born on August 15, 1923 in Massena. He was blessed with a sharp mind and conscientious character. He graduated as the “top boy” of his 1941 Massena High School Class. His classmates nicknamed him “Little Einstein”.

Mark loved math, science, poetry and riddles. He was an avid crossword puzzler. He often tested his four sons with various challenges. For a school science project he suggested and helped build a perpetual motion machine (unsuccessfully).

Consider this word puzzle. There are two answers. First answer has 6 letters, second answer has three letters. The clues are: smart, honest, hardworking, trustworthy, thoughtful, logical, friendly and kind. The answers are obvious to his sons; “Father” and “Dad”.

Mark served stateside in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of a special unit assigned to study various science courses at Syracuse University.

Mark was employed at ALCOA starting in 1941. After a day at ALCOA, he began building his home and a matching house across town. He also built a roof top solar water heater more than 40 years ago.

He served as vice-chairman of the Massena Housing Authority during the construction of the Highrise. He is a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Massena Elks Lodge # 1702.

Mark was also a part-time square dance caller. Over 50 years ago, you could have heard him in the Douglas Rd. home basement on his own amplifier system singing “Swing your partner ‘Round and ‘Round”.

Mark’s life partner is Elizabeth “Betty” Snider. Who he married on September 24, 1950 at Sacred Heart Church, Massena. Mark faithfully observed his Catholic faith through the years.

During his 67 years of marriage, when Mark wasn’t busy at ALCOA or home, he and Betty travelled to many destinations in European countries, Russia, Egypt and a total of 34 states in the U.S. He studied the locations before the trips and kept daily journals to share the trips with his sons upon returning.
