Marjorie Jones, 89, Gouverneur

Marjorie Jones, 89, passed away Sunday evening, May 30, 2010 under the care of her family and the caring staff at United Helpers Nursing Home, Ogdensburg.

Marjorie was born June 17, 1920 in Rome, the daughter of Clarence and Esther Tracey White. She graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1936 and moved with her parents in 1937 to Florida where she taught English at Citrus High School in Hernanda. Marjorie worked at the hosiery mill on Prospect Street, Grant’s Department Store, and Kinney Drugs of Gouverneur. She and her husband Earl operated a dairy farm on the Clinton Street Road for over thirty years.

The couple retired in 1977 and moved to Summerfield, FL until 2005 when Marjorie returned to the Gouverneur area. Marjorie lived at United Helpers Adult Care, Ogdensburg for four years until recently moving to the nursing home.

Marjorie married Earl Byron Jones on December 10, 1938 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church. Mr. Jones passed away August 21, 1996.

Marjorie was a member of the Gouverneur Rebekahs and enjoyed bowling, reading, baking, music, sewing, making crafts, playing cards and games, and attending family reunions. She had many friends in Gouverneur, Florida, and at the United Helpers homes. She always enjoyed meeting and talking to people and had a great sense of humor. The staff of the care homes enjoyed working with her, and there was always lots of laughter.

Marjorie is survived by five sons, Richard and Mary Jane of Hailesboro, William and Connie of Haverford, PA, Thomas and Joy of Henderson, NV, James of West Palm Beach, FL, and John and Judy of Littleton, NH; two daughters, Jennifer Jones of Germantown, MD, and Liz-Ann and James Collins of Ojai, CA; 22 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren; a sister, Betty Jane Maley of Oxford, FL; and nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents and two sisters Marion Morris and Arlene Smith.

Funeral services will be private with the Green Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Memorial donations may be made to Care Packages for Soldiers and may be mailed to Grace Gates, 58 Averell Street, Gouverneur, NY 13642.
