MASSENA -- Mrs. Mable E. Harwood, 94, a longtime resident of Andrews Street, peacefully passed away early Wednesday morning, December 20, at Massena Memorial Hospital. She had recently been a resident of the Highland Nursing Home.
Mable was born January 2, 1923 in Lisbon, one of seven children to George B. Jr. and Hilda Winters Sanderson. She attended schools in Morley and Canton. On February 1, 1941, she married James H. Harwood in Deferiet, New York. He predeceased her on January 9, 1972.
Mable worked in the food service department at Potsdam State for 20 ½ years, retiring in 1984. Her friendship throughout the years with students earned her the nickname of “Grandma Mable” to many of them. She also cared for many children for a good part of her life. She was a dedicated and faithful member of the Massena Pilgrim Holiness Church. She enjoyed corresponding with many of the church members, young and old, through the mail if they had moved away. She fondly remembered their birthdays and anniversaries with a card and treated her doctors with a special goody basket of banana bread, apple sauce and jams. Mable enjoyed crocheting, traveling and spending time with her family. She followed her local great grandson’s accomplishments through newspaper clippings and listening to their games on WMSA.
Mable is survived by her son, Lloyd and Millie Harwood of China Grove, NC; her grandchildren, Kim Moffitt and her companion, Steve Mundy of Massena, Patrick Smith and his wife, Jacenta of Gilbert, AZ, Tracey Harwood of Statesville, NC and Viola Reid of Salisbury, NC; her step grandchildren, Larry Tullos of Witchita, KS, David Tullos of Tennessee, Sheryl Bullock of Salisbury, NC and Lisa Tullos of Coolemee, NC; and several great grandchildren including Nick, Ryan, and Nathan Moffitt, all of Massena.
She is also survived by her brothers, Lloyd Sanderson of Rota, Spain and Howard and Rita Sanderson of Morley; her sister, Myra and Ray Doud of South Colton and Mission, Texas; a sister-in-law, Louise Sanderson of Massena; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mable was predeceased by her daughter, Alice M. Smith on December 1, 2017; two sisters, Helen Lovine and Shirley Dafoe; and a brother, Ronald Sanderson.
Friends may call Wednesday 1-3:00 p.m. at the Massena Pilgrim Holiness Church, where funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Timothy Montgomery, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Morley Cemetery.
