MASSENA -- Mrs. Edith L. Baker, 99, a former resident of Massena and Potsdam, peacefully passed away Thursday afternoon, February 22, 2018 at The Pines of Glens Falls, where she had been a resident since 2015.
Edith was born August 18, 1918 in Fort Covington, the daughter of the late William and Helen “Minnie” (Thornton) Mitchell. She attended schools in Moira and later graduated from nursing school. She and her first husband, Robert Bushey, owned and operated a farm in the Nicholville and Lawrenceville area for many years before he predeceased her. She later married William Baker, being married for 27 years before he passed away in 1978.
She later worked as a nurse at Mercy Hospital in Watertown until her retirement. After retirement, she moved to Massena, where did private home care nursing. She was a former member of the Grange in Champlain and worked very hard throughout her life gardening and enjoying the harvest of her garden. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, embroidery, cooking, playing Bingo and cards. She also had a great love for traveling and animals – especially cats and dogs.
Edith is survived by her daughter, Shirley Bainano of North Bangor; four grandchildren including Juddy Plumb and Kimberly Bren, who were caregivers; many great and great-great grandchildren; and her sister, Evelyn Pratt of Florida; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husbands, she was predeceased by a daughter, Marilyn Carr in April 1997; her brothers, Robert and Ora Mitchell; her half brothers, Fred, Burt, and Roy Elliott; and half sisters, Emmajean Porter and Marion Phelps.
There will be no calling hours. A celebration of her life will be held in the spring at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Sand Hill Cemetery, Dickinson.
