Clifton E. Mason, age 93, passed away on Sunday evening, May 29, 2011 at the E.J. Noble Hospital, Gouverneur.
Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Thursday,
June 2nd from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. and also on Friday from 3 until 4 p.m. His funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 4:00 p.m. followed by a reception held in the fellowship hall of the Gouverneur United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the East Riverside Cemetery.
Mr. Mason was born on April 26, 1918 in Antwerp. He was the son of the late Ernest and Agnes (Reynolds) Mason. He graduated from the Antwerp High School in 1936 and served as a Corporal in Battery “A” of the 104th Battalion in the U.S. Army in the Western Pacific during World War II.
He married Marion E. Hewitt on June 9, 1946 in the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with Rev. Harold Thomas officiating. The couple had lived all of their married lives in Gouverneur. Mrs. Mason passed away on November 3, 1999.
Clifton worked as a jeweler for twenty three years. He had also worked as a rural mail carrier for thirty three years before retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Gouverneur United Methodist Church, the VFW, American Legion, and the Rural Carrier Association.
His survivors include three sons and their wives, Alan C. (Joan), Arnold E. (Joan) Mason, and Andrew M. (Deborah) Mason all of Gouverneur; two daughters, Alice F. and Joseph Malec of Plano, TX, Amy A. Pilon of Gouverneur; a brother and his wife, Dean (Betty) Mason of Gouverneur; 14 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Frieda Mason of Sackets Harbor; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Mason was predeceased by his sister and her husband, Neva (Kenneth) Parow; and a brother, Franklin Mason.
