'What Exists' study by Potsdam Dissolution Committee now online

POTSDAM -- The first public draft of the Village of Potsdam Dissolution Committee's "What Exists" report is now out and is online.

The exercise is part of the effort to see if substantial savings can be obtained by dissolving village government.

Hundreds of hours of work have gone into categorizing the assets, budgets, staff and work of all units of village and town government, such as highways and water and sewer infrastructure, police, fire and rescue services, and administration and courts. It also lays out the differences between town and village municipal codes.

It is in preparation for a deeper look into what can be done if the village does dissolve and town and county governments assume the responsibilities and services now provided by the village and town.

"The primary goal of the study is to ensure that Village of Potsdam residents have the information required to be provided by state law so that they understand the implications of voting to dissolve the Village," the report says. "An important related goal is to inform the greater Potsdam community about possible options to improve the delivery of municipal services."

The report is online at www.cgr.org/potsdam/reports.aspx.

A public forum on the report is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, in the auditorium at Potsdam High School.
